TwoFaceTide began when Lithuanian Martynas Šerpytis and Danish Bertram Kvist Lynggaard were studying at the Danish National Academy of Music. With a shared passion for modern jazz, they quickly found a common musical bond and began composing music together.

The goal of the project is to combine different cultural foundations and experiment with what arises from uniting them. The two composers' different musical backgrounds and understanding of music give them very distinct approaches, and it is the meeting of these worlds that makes TwoFaceTide interesting.

Inspired by contemporary jazz artists such as Liudas Mockūnas, Emile Parisien, and Emmanuel Wilkins, Two Face Tide seeks to explore the borderland between the composed and the unexpected. Writing music that gets close to human emotions — or attempts to understand them — is central to TwoFaceTide's core. And in this creative process, it is a pleasure to collaborate with an international partner who brings different colors to the musical palette than one might have grown up with.

Therefore, a large part of TwoFaceTide’s identity is also built on being a dual entity: a band with both a Danish and a Lithuanian rhythm section. Not just as a "rhythm section," but as musicians who can contribute their own musical visions to the project, just as Bertram and Martynas add their individual takes on the music. This concept started as a logistical solution to perform concerts in both Denmark and Lithuania without transporting an entire band back and forth. It quickly proved to be an idea that could further highlight the distinct musical identities of both nations. When TwoFaceTide plays with the Lithuanian rhythm section, it is with musicians who, from childhood, have cultivated Lithuanian folk music and aspired from the deep Lithuanian "Avant Garde" history that introduces deep conversational part of playing and more complex rhythms than typically found in Danish folk music. Meanwhile, the Danish rhythm section adds the highly melodic and melancholic tonal language that has defined Nordic folk music over the years. Both groups have their own strengths, and it’s a pleasure to experience how they can shape the music in different ways. The two rhythm sections consist of the following musicians:

Lithuanian:
Andrius Savčenko – piano
Gediminas Stepanavičius – double bass
Dovydas Jonas Šulskis – drums

Danish:
Asger Brink – piano
Sylvester Pedersen – double bass
Mads Tornemark – drums

Two Face Tide released their debut album in May 2024, titled “OCCURRENTS.” The name derives from the Latin word "occurrens", meaning a "meeting" between people, and the English word “currents,” as the album represents a mix of various currents within jazz music and its many branches. With equal parts Lithuanian folk traditions and Danish hymn-like harmonies, the album is a melting pot of international musicality. The album is expected to be released on vinyl in 2025.

Though the group started in late 2023, Two Face Tide has already performed at several jazz festivals, including Vinterjazz, Vilnius MAMA Jazz, and Alytus Jazz Festival, during 2024.
