ARVYDAS KAZLAUSKAS /

LIUDAS MOCKŪNAS

On a warm September evening in the Drabiņu mire, a recording session took place with one of the leading free jazz musicians in Europe, a Lithuanian free jazz musician, composer, and educator Liudas Mockūnas and Lithuanian free improvisation saxophonist Arvydas Kazlauskas, living in Latvia. The recording concert took place in an amphitheater made of peat, named Saulgrieži [Solstice], created by artist Janis Gutans-Grass, constructed as a meditative labyrinth with its entrance to the east and exit to the west. The compositions’ titles are listed in three languages — Latvian, Lithuanian, and Old Prussian — thus attempting to linguistically get a feel for the unifying way that the Baltic nations perceive the world.
